I hope these words can somehow be a blessing and encouragement to you all. Micah 6:8 says, "He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." When I read that verse from the Bible, I praise God for Grandpa! He lived this chapter of life as an example of faithfulness, perseverence, work ethic, mercy towards others, and walking humbly before the King of the Universe. He loved God with all of his heart, soul, mind, and strength, and He loved his neighbor as himself. One day, I believe I will be able to thank him face to face in eternal life for showing me what is good...for inspiring me...for inspiring all of us. What a legacy! In the meantime, I imagine Grandma's buttermilk pancakes and cinnamon roles and dinner rolls and garden-fresh green beans and canned pears and delicious pies and...oh...that flourescent green velvet pear salad...mmm...you know the one I am talking about...are tasting better than ever to Grandpa. Having said all of that, I imagine the sweet fellowship between the two of them and Jesus tastes even better. Whether you know him as Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, Great-Great Grandpa, or friend, you share in thankfulness for knowing him. Did he love well or what? As I reflect, I wonder if everyone who interacted with Grandpa was made to feel like you had a special place in his heart reserved just for you. He was a man who was quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. He was a man after God's own heart, and I can hear God Himself say to Grandpa, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Grandpa, thank you for living a life of justice, mercy, and humility. You set an example for more than you know. I knew way back when I tried so hard, visit after visit, to hold back the tears every time we embraced and then had to let go before traveling back home to Yakima from Oak Harbor. I know it now when having to say farewell...it isn't much easier. Thank you for showing me...for showing us...what is good. Although we love and miss you dearly, we thank you for pointing us to Jesus...the most faithful, merciful, and humble person who will ever live. To Him be the glory both now and in the age to come. Grace and peace, Daryl
