Obituary for Rebecca Jean "Becky" Myers

Rebecca Jean "Becky" Myers
Rebecca Jean Myers

Rebecca Jean “Becky” Myers, age 76, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, May 19, 2017 in Oak Harbor, WA. She was born on April 26, 1941 in Batesville, MS to Frank and Viola (Hood) Myers. The family would eventually grow to six daughters. Becky and her sisters went to grade school in Curtis Station, MS, and high school in Batesville, allowing them to stay close to home.

Becky’s father was a sharecropper. The family had a parcel of land that they farmed and grew cotton. Dad never let them avoid their studies, so the girls would work on the weekends and attend church on Sundays. Becky is remembered by her siblings as being a clown; always telling jokes and kidding around (there is a story about a turkey that would harass and chase her). She was also strong-willed and spoke her mind no matter what the outcome.

As the matriarch of a military family, a new duty station at NAS Whidbey brought Becky and her family, including son Conrad, to Oak Harbor, WA in the 1960’s.
William Myers met Becky in 1970. After a year of courtship, they were married on June 18, 1971. During their 43 years together, Becky and William owned and operated several businesses, including Monique’s Creations, Top of the Hill Video 1 (at Market Town) and Video 2 (where the BBQ Joint now resides), Myers Mini-Mart (by NAS Whidbey), and a motel and restaurant in Concrete, WA. They also owned several commercial buildings where small businesses could prosper and serve the Oak Harbor community.

Bill and Becky were home bodies and best friends; where one was, the other was not too far away. Even though she made repeated trips back to Mississippi to visit family, Becky preferred to be at home with Bill. They loved to farm and work the land together. She and Bill each had their own tractors. They even tried their hand at raising miniature horses and llamas.

Becky had a few hobbies. Bowling was one of them. She found herself an avid fan and was a member of a bowling league. She loved to garden, and was an arts and crafts lover extraordinaire, enjoying woodworking, sewing, quilting, and painting rocks.

Surviving Becky are her son, Conrad Montgomery; her sisters: Francis Needham, Lynn (Jim) Simmerman, Mae Felts (all of Mississippi), and Theresa (John) Hardin of Arkansas; her step-daughters, Karen (Myers) Wright and Coleen (Bob) Elerick; her granddaughter Randi (Justin) Vallencourt, and great granddaughter Ava Vallencourt.

Preceding Becky in death were her husband Bill Myers of Oak Harbor, WA, her sister Nancy Pearson, and her brothers-in-law Jimmy Needham and George Felts of Mississippi.

The family would like to thank the staff at Regency on Whidbey and Whidbey Health Hospice for their care and compassion. The family suggests memorials to WAIF: P.O. Box 1108, Coupeville, WA 98239-1108.

A graveside service for Becky will be held later this summer at Maple Leaf Cemetery with a reception to follow at Wallin Funeral Home.
Arrangements are entrusted to Wallin Funeral Home, Oak Harbor, WA. Please visit Becky’s page in the Book of Memories online at www.wallinfuneralhome.com to share memories and condolences.
